Kitchen & Cabinets
Rift-Sawn White Oak Kitchen
A few years ago, Buzzy received a visit from a Charleston couple who were building a beach house on Saint Helena Island Sound. They knew what they wanted and needed help getting the details worked out. Buzzy often works with clients to help develop ideas into tangible drawings. This project includes a matching master bathroom and master bedroom.
From the beginning, it was obvious that they were very nice people, so Buzzy pulled out all the stops and produced nothing but the best of what they were looking for.
A nice detail is the island unit’s oil-rubbed, brass drawer pulls.
Here’s a production photo of the overhead cabinets in the shop that were installed over the stove, sink, and counter.
Designed by the architect, Buzzy was asked to build and install this walnut kitchen.
Walnut Kitchen & Waterfall Counter
The island unit’s upper level is made from walnut with waterfall ends. Due to the top being 10 feet long, we had to lap the joints in the center of the top for the grain to run around the ends to the floor.
This special island unit is made from a very rare cypress, provided by the contractor, dating back to 500 BC. With every cut that Buzzy and his team made, the color would oxidize immediately. The wood was so old that as soon as it touched the air, it would go from brilliant gold to a soft brown.

Tombee Plantation House Heart Pine Kitchen
In 1994, Buzzy and the team were asked by the Tombee plantation owner to create new kitchen cabinets and an island base that would fold in with the rest of the 227-year-old plantation house details.
Buzzy referred to the original moulding profiles from the historic home’s footprint in order to incorporate a seamless design.
The cabinet around the stove was built using reclaimed heart pine as was the painted cabinets around the back kitchen door.
Tombee is one of the few antebellum plantations remaining on St. Helena Island.
Buzzy used quarter-sawn river recovered sinker cypress for the island base, including a drop leaf top for extra counter space during the holidays.
This wonderful kitchen overlooks the Beaufort river and was made with quarter-sawn white oak. The cabinets are held together with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and the entire kitchen is modeled after a 17th-century churchwarden’s cabinet.
18th Century White Oak Kitchen
The owner wanted her kitchen to look historically correct in every detail, right down to all components, and to be made entirely from solid wood.
She wanted to see solid wood shelves and tongue and groove cabinet backs when she opened the cabinet doors. Buzzy also used an old recipe for a hot oil and wax finish.
Most kitchens today are made with plywood — this kitchen was made entirely of solid wood to give the owner a feeling of 100-year-old cabinets.
African Mahogany Kitchen
This kitchen was designed using African mahogany for the panels and Honduran mahogany for the styles and rails.
This figured maple kitchen was custom-built for a former chef who was passionate about surrounding himself with an elegant cooking space.
